EU retailers pull headphones after study finds widespread hormone-disrupting chemicals

Major brands including Apple, Bose, and JBL are implicated, but researchers say there’s no immediate danger to users.

European retailers have begun pulling select headphones from sale after a major EU-funded study found hormone-disrupting chemicals in every single model tested. The findings span premium brands and budget imports alike, raising broader concerns about material safety across the audio industry.

What the study actually found

The investigation, part of the ToxFree LIFE for All project, analyzed 81 headphone models sold across five countries: Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, and Austria. Researchers tested 180 plastic components and found that 100% of the products contained hazardous chemicals. Major brands such as Apple, Bose, JBL, Samsung, and Sennheiser were all included in the testing pool.

The results are consistent and don’t single out one bad product line, pointing to an industry-wide reliance on these materials. The study found bisphenols in nearly all products, with Bisphenol A (BPA) detected in 98% of samples and Bisphenol S (BPS) appearing in more than 75%. Some concentrations reached 351 mg/kg, far exceeding the 10 mg/kg limit proposed by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). Researchers say these chemicals may migrate from headphones to the skin during prolonged use, with heat and sweat from workouts accelerating this process.

A more expensive price tag does not correlate to reduced exposure.

One of the more surprising findings is that price doesn’t correlate with safety. The highest levels of harmful plasticizers and chlorinated paraffins appeared in a sample purchased from an online marketplace. However, hazardous chemicals were still found across all price tiers. In other words, spending more doesn’t necessarily reduce exposure.

The researchers rated each headphone based on three categories: parts that touch the skin, parts that don’t touch the skin, and overall product safety. Ratings ranged from “green” (lowest risk) to “red” (high concern). Notably, results varied widely, even within the same brand. For example, the Apple AirPods Pro 2 and JBL Tune 720BT scored “green” across all categories. However, some child models and gaming headsets scored “red” in multiple categories. Despite this, experts stress there is no immediate health risk from normal headphone use.

Why retailers are reacting now

Major European retailers, including Bol.com, Coolblue, and MediaMarkt, have reportedly removed some of the worst-performing models from their shelves, although they haven’t publicly confirmed which ones. This response reflects growing pressure within the EU to reduce consumer exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals, especially in products worn for long periods.

Unfortunately, the report highlights a growing issue called “regrettable substitution.” This is where banned chemicals are replaced with slightly modified alternatives. For example, older flame retardants are increasingly replaced with organophosphate compounds, such as RDP, which emerging research links to neurotoxicity and endocrine disruption. Companies comply with regulations, but the replacements don’t always eliminate the underlying risk.

Based on the available data, there’s no evidence of immediate harm from using your headphones. Karolína Brabcová, one of the study’s authors, emphasized that the detected levels are “minuscule.” Additionally, independent experts agree that the report does not clarify how much of these chemicals enter the body during normal use.

However, the study raises valid concerns about cumulative exposure. Headphones are worn for long periods directly against the skin, making them more dangerous than other devices. Gaming headsets, in particular, performed poorly in testing, with around 60% receiving a “red” rating overall. That’s notable because users often wear them for hours at a time. Meanwhile, many children’s headphones performed better, suggesting manufacturers can reduce risks by using stricter material standards.

Stricter rules in the EU could influence the US market.

Companies, including Bose and Sennheiser, reaffirmed that their products comply with existing regulations. Some also questioned the study’s methodology, noting that it used stricter thresholds than those typically applied to electronics. That’s an important distinction, as “legally compliant” doesn’t necessarily mean “free from concern” under stricter voluntary standards.

Nevertheless, the study’s authors are calling for stricter EU regulations, bans on entire classes of harmful chemicals, greater transparency from manufacturers, and an update to the EU’s chemical safety laws. If that happens, we could see a shift similar to what occurred with BPA in plastics, where safer alternatives eventually became the norm. In time, this study of harmful chemicals could influence the US headphone market.
