TL;DR
  • YouTube Music has launched a new AI-powered playlist generation tool.
  • This allows listeners to create playlists by describing their preferences.
  • The feature is available to Premium subscribers now on the Android and iOS mobile apps.

YouTube Music has become one of the most successful music streaming services on the market in recent years. Now, it is rolling out a new AI-powered playlist generation tool. This matches similar installments already launched by rivals, including Spotify, Deezer, and Amazon Music. From today, listeners can create playlists simply by describing their preferences.

The feature is available to YouTube Music Premium subscribers on the corresponding Android and iOS apps. Once opened, you must tap the “New” button in the Library tab, select “AI Playlist”, and use your voice or text to select and define your desired music.

YouTube Music Lyrics are also reserved for Premium subscribers.

This latest update comes at a time when YouTube Music is planning to upgrade its Premium subscription offerings. For example, the company recently began limiting song lyrics to paying subscribers. However, YouTube Music told TechCrunch that the restriction only affects “a small percentage of ad-supported users,” and that lyrics remain available to most free users.

These changes follow the company’s experimental AI-powered music commentary tool in the YouTube Labs program, rivaling Spotify’s AI DJ feature. YouTube also added “AI music host” voice commentary between songs on playlists. These improvements coincide with YouTube Music becoming one of Alphabet’s main growth drivers. For example, YouTube’s subscription business, which includes YouTube Music, YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, and NFL Sunday Ticket, now generates approximately $20 billion per year. Similarly, Google‘s subscription services continue to grow, with the company reporting 325 million paid subscribers across Google One and YouTube Premium in Q4 2025.

Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai recently hinted that the company plans to continue expanding its AI investments in 2026. “To meet customer demand and capitalize on the growing opportunities we have ahead of us, our 2026 CapEx investments are anticipated to be in the range of $175 to $185 billion.”
