Spotify is working on a smart glasses app with lyrics support

Our sister site, Android Authority, has unearthed code in Spotify’s beta app that indicates that the company is working on XR glasses integration. This comes at a time when major players, such as Google and Samsung, are joining the burgeoning smart glasses market.

Android Authority discovered hints within the code that suggest you will soon be able to see a “Now Playing” screen on your XR glasses. Similarly, you’ll be able to display a “Lyrics” screen when you want to sing along to your favorite songs. That’s handy, particularly if you plan to host a karaoke barbecue party.

However, Google states on its Android XR developer page that AI glasses don’t run a full APK on the device. “The AI glasses experience is built on the existing Android Activity framework API and includes additional concepts to support the unique aspects of AI glasses. Unlike XR headsets that run a full APK on the device, AI glasses use a dedicated activity that runs within your phone’s existing app. This activity is projected from the host device to the AI glasses.” In other words, you’ll still need your smartphone handy to use Spotify with your smart glasses.

There’s currently no indication whether you’ll be able to control Your Library or create playlists directly from XR glasses. Likewise, the code does not reveal whether you can browse music, podcasts, or audiobooks. Spotify has not confirmed whether glasses will be able to control volume, skip tracks, or pause songs, either.
