TL;DR
  • Sonova, which acquired Sennheiser’s consumer headphones division in 2022, has announced it intends to sell the business.
  • Sennheiser says day-to-day operations, product development, warranties, and customer service remain unchanged during the search for a new owner.

Sennheiser’s consumer headphones business is on the market. Parent company Sonova announced it intends to divest the brand as it refocuses on its core hearing care business, leaving Sennheiser’s consumer division looking for a new home.

In a statement posted to Reddit, Sennheiser said the split “aligns well with our strategic focus” on audiophile and premium headphones and in-home audio, and that finding the right buyer is now the priority. For now, nothing changes for customers: products will continue to be developed and supported, and warranties remain in effect.

Sonova was more blunt in its official announcement, stating that distribution channels, demand dynamics, and development cycles in consumer audio differed too much from its core hearing aids and cochlear implants business, so the consumer division has been listed as a business unit held for sale.

Sonova picked up Sennheiser’s consumer audio arm in 2022 for €200 million, while the original Sennheiser family retained ownership of the professional audio side of the business. The divestment means the consumer brand — responsible for headphones such as the HD 600 series and the Momentum line — will be under new ownership for the second time in three years.

Who ends up buying it is an open question. Reactions online range from hopeful (a European buyer, a crowdfund) to worried (a Chinese conglomerate, private equity). Sennheiser hasn’t named any potential buyers or given a timeline for the sale.

We’ll update this story as more details emerge.
