JBL announces Xtreme 5 and Go 5 with new lighting
March 30, 2026

- JBL has announced the JBL Xtreme 5 and JBL Go 5, updated versions of two of its most popular portable Bluetooth speakers.
- Both speakers add new built-in lighting effects, while continuing to support Auracast.
- JBL says the Xtreme 5 will cost $399 USD, while the Go 5 will cost $54.95 USD.
JBL has announced the JBL Xtreme 5 and JBL Go 5, updated versions of two of its most recognizable portable Bluetooth speakers. Rather than reinventing either product, JBL is focusing on the upgrades that usually matter most in this category: louder playback, deeper bass, tougher designs, and more convenient everyday features. Both speakers continue to support Auracast, while adding lossless USB-C audio and, most notably, built-in lighting effects, which are new additions for both the Xtreme and Go lineups.

The bigger update is the JBL Xtreme 5, which JBL says uses a new acoustic design with dual tweeters, a subwoofer, and higher power output to improve its JBL Pro Sound. It also adds SmartEQ Mode, an AI-powered feature that identifies whether you’re listening to podcasts or music and automatically adjusts the EQ to match. JBL also says AI Sound Boost helps reduce distortion at higher volumes, though that feature is not entirely new to JBL’s portable speaker lineup.
Another new addition is the JBL Edge Light UI, which brings six ambient lighting modes to the Xtreme 5: Freeze, Bounce, Trim, Switch, Loop, and Neon. That stands out even more because JBL’s recent Charge 6 and Flip 7 launches skipped built-in lighting entirely, making the Xtreme 5 feel more intentionally positioned as a party-focused speaker. The Xtreme 5 also retains Auracast multi-speaker and stereo pairing, supports lossless USB-C audio, and offers up to 24 hours of battery life, with an additional 4 hours using Playtime Boost. JBL says the speaker will cost $399 USD.

The JBL Go 5 sticks closer to the formula that made the smaller speaker popular in the first place, but JBL says it still improves on the previous version with deeper bass and louder playback. One of the more practical additions is AirTouch, which lets you stereo pair two Go 5 speakers by tapping them side by side instead of opening the app. JBL also includes its Ambient Edge Light UI, which adds selectable lighting themes along with built-in visual indicators for power, Bluetooth pairing, low battery, and Auracast mode. Like the Xtreme 5, the Go 5 retains Auracast support, adds lossless USB-C audio playback, and can link with multiple Auracast-enabled JBL speakers. JBL rates it for up to 8 hours of playtime, or 10 hours with Playtime Boost. The company says it will cost $54.95 USD.

On paper, JBL appears to be improving the right things, but launch-day claims only go so far. We’ll need to get both speakers into the SoundGuys testing lab for a full review before we can say whether these updates actually improve real-world performance.
