Apple's camera-equipped AirPods may be in limbo, but iOS 27 drops a big clue
July 6, 2026

- A leaker hints Apple may have paused its camera-equipped AirPods Pro, but new iOS 27 beta code suggests development is still ongoing.
- The rumored cameras are expected to power Siri’s Visual Intelligence features, helping the earbuds understand your surroundings for hands-free assistance.
- Apple may still be refining the AI experience and addressing hardware and privacy challenges before bringing the earbuds to market.
Apple’s rumored camera-equipped AirPods just got a lot more confusing. On one hand, a fresh post from Apple leaker Kosutami hints that the long-rumored AirPods Pro with built-in cameras may be having trouble. On the other hand, Apple’s latest developer software appears to contain new clues suggesting the company is still actively developing features for exactly such a product. The conflicting reports leave us with an unusual situation: Apple may still be working on the technology, even if the hardware itself isn’t ready to move forward.
The uncertainty started after Kosutami shared a brief “case concluded” post on X, referencing an earlier claim about camera-equipped AirPods Pro. There wasn’t any explanation attached, but the wording has led many to believe the project has either been put on hold or quietly canceled. That interpretation doesn’t fully align with what we’ve heard in recent months.
Earlier this year, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple had progressed far enough with the earbuds to begin preparing for early production. However, he also noted that Apple wasn’t expected to release them until it was satisfied with the AI experience, particularly the Visual Intelligence features tied to Siri. So, the earbuds may not be waiting on better cameras — they could be waiting on smarter software.
That’s where another recent discovery becomes interesting. Coder Sami Henri Gold on X found references inside the latest iOS 27 developer beta describing software that processes images captured by two cameras positioned on either side of a user’s head. The same code also references a device internally known as B790, which some believe could refer to Apple’s rumored smart glasses.

But the camera placement raises questions. Smart glasses and headsets typically have forward-facing cameras near your eyes, whereas the beta specifically mentions two cameras on opposite sides of the user’s head. That description matches previous rumors that Apple has been experimenting with cameras hidden inside the stems of AirPods Pro far better than it matches any existing Apple product.
If the rumors are true, these cameras would act as an extra set of eyes for Apple’s AI, helping Siri understand your surroundings. For instance, you could ask Siri to identify a building, translate a menu in front of you, or provide more information about an object you’re looking at — all without needing to interact with another device.
Of course, turning that idea into a real product is another challenge entirely. Tiny earbuds leave very little room for camera hardware, battery capacity, and additional processing. Apple would also need a clear way to signal when the cameras are active; otherwise, privacy concerns could overshadow the product before it even launches.
So where does that leave us? The rumors don’t necessarily cancel each other out. It’s entirely possible that Apple is continuing to develop the underlying software while reconsidering the hardware or delaying its release until the AI experience is polished enough. For now, the latest leak muddies the waters, but the code inside iOS 27 suggests the idea of camera-equipped AirPods hasn’t disappeared just yet.
