Apple’s headphones rarely see deep discounts, so I was surprised to see the new AirPods Max 2 selling for just $399 on Prime Day — down from $549 — a full $150 off! That’s the cheapest we’ve seen them, and it makes one of the priciest pairs of over-ears on the market a lot easier to consider.
When we put the AirPods Max 2 through our lab, the noise canceling came out as some of the best you can buy, blocking out close to 90% of the racket around you — easily a match for other flagships. They sound great too, with strong bass and clear, detailed vocals, and you can plug them in over USB-C for full lossless audio, which is a nice touch that most wireless headphones still don’t offer.
They are heavy at 386 grams, but that’s because of the stylish aluminum slabs for earcups. Battery life is the bigger issue: you get around 20 hours per charge, which feels stingy in 2026, when competitors push past 35 hours. And nearly every standout feature, from the software extras to multipoint connection, only works if you’re using an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. If you’re already in the Apple ecosystem and you’ve been eyeing the AirPods Max, this is the time to grab them. You’re getting top-tier noise canceling and sound for $150 less.
