  • Sonos is updating its app again, fixing what’s wrong with queues and more.
  • The update now ensures that your queues remain intact, even as you switch from one source to another.
  • It also brings the virtual volume knob to Android, along with better search functionality across all platforms.

Back in July, Sonos rolled out a major redesign for its companion app, undoing most of the horrible choices that almost sank the business. This update brought a refreshed navigation system, improved volume controls for iOS, and customizable speaker sorting. Now, the audio giant is bringing yet another update, and while it’s not as significant as the last one, it brings a major quality-of-life upgrade.

Sonos announced version 27.1 of the app through a Community post, highlighting key upgrades coming with the latest version. One of the most significant features in the update is support for queues that don’t clear automatically when you switch from one source to another. Sonos describes a queue as a “dynamic playlist,” and any track you play from the app on a device adds to the queue first before playing. However, if the Sonos speaker switches from playing from one device to another, say a TV, or to the Radio mode, this queue would previously get cleared. This can be a major annoyance if you’re slowly progressing through a carefully curated playlist.

The latest update fixes that, keeping the queue intact on a particular device even when you’re playing audio from another.

Besides this upgrade to queues, the Sonos app also offers autocomplete for searches, so you don’t have to type the entire track title. The Android app also supports the two-finger gesture for volume, letting you increase or decrease volume with a virtual knob. The Android app now also lets listeners add tracks to the queue by swiping right and lets them remove tracks from the Recently Played history as well.
