If you were excited about the Nothing Ear 3, it looks like they aren't coming. At least, not by that name.

TL;DR
  • Nothing has confirmed the names of its upcoming earbuds: the Nothing Ear and Nothing Ear (a).
  • Nothing Ear will likely be a sequel to the Ear 2, while the Ear (a) are probably going to be cheaper.
  • Interestingly, the company didn’t stop using numbers for its Nothing Phone 2(a), launched just a few months ago.

Last week, we told you that Nothing was starting to tease its next earbuds launch. Today, on X (formerly known as Twitter), the company confirmed that two sets of earbuds are on the way — and it even told us the names.

Surprisingly, Nothing is not going to release the Nothing Ear (3), as we would have expected. Instead, the company is launching Nothing Ear — that’s it, no number or anything. In addition to these, it will also launch Nothing Ear (a) (once again, no number), which we assume will be a less expensive variant.

If, for some reason, you can’t see the tweet, here’s what the company said about Ear and Ear A:

We started Nothing with audio in 2021 and since our very first product, we’ve relentlessly refined our design and engineering with every new addition to our audio product suite. 2024 is the year we’re unveiling the ultimate iteration of Nothing Audio with two new products that reflect the culmination of three years of design and innovation. What we envisioned from the start — premium for everyone that isn’t about market price, but user preference. So with this significant milestone, we’ve reset our naming strategy, stripping back the numbers to center the focus around the product and the unique experience it delivers for each user. True to Nothing. Get ready to welcome Nothing Ear and Nothing Ear (a) on 18 April 2024.

While the company doesn’t say as much, it’s very likely that Nothing Ear will be the follow-up to Ear (2), acting as what would have been the Ear (3). It’s also likely the Ear (a) will be a follow-up to Ear (Stick), which were a cheaper version of the company’s original Ear (1).

As for the reason behind the name change, we are shaking our heads. The company just released the Nothing Phone 2(a) smartphone and didn’t seem to have a problem including a number there. It will be interesting to see if the next Nothing phone is just a Nothing Phone.

Either way, we will find out everything we need to know about Nothing Ear and Nothing Ear (a) later this month, per the tweet.
