JBL refreshes Boombox and PartyBox speakers with more power and smarter features

JBL is rolling out new versions of two of its most popular portable speakers: the Boombox 4 and PartyBox 720. These refreshed models build on the Boombox 3 and PartyBox 710, offering more output, upgraded internals, and new connectivity features aimed at both casual listeners and serious party hosts.

The Boombox 4 ($549.95) now features two 5-inch woofers, two 0.75-inch tweeters, and three passive radiators, delivering up to 210 watts of output in AC mode. A new LED-lit Bass Boost horn lets you toggle between two bass profiles, either “deeper” or “punchier,” while AI Sound Boost claims to actively reduce distortion at high volumes.

The speaker is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance, and despite its larger frame, it’s lighter than the previous model. JBL claims up to 34 hours of battery life with PlaytimeBoost enabled. Other upgrades include stereo pairing, multi-speaker connectivity via Auracast, Bluetooth 5.4, a replaceable battery, and lossless audio playback over USB-C.

The PartyBox 720 ($1,099) is JBL’s second-largest speaker with a built-in battery and is designed to deliver high output for large gatherings. It offers up to 800 watts of power through two 9-inch woofers and two 1.25-inch dome tweeters. The built-in light show includes star effects, trails, and strobes that react to music in real time.

Dual XLR inputs support microphones, guitars, or DJ gear, and USB-C handles both playback and charging. The speaker offers up to 15 hours of playtime, and users can extend that by swapping in additional batteries, which are sold separately. It also supports Auracast for multi-speaker setups and includes integrated wheels, a handle, and an IPX4 splash-resistant rating.

The upgrades make each speaker more powerful, versatile, and durable without reinventing the formula. The JBL Boombox 4 and PartyBox 720 go on pre-sale on September 3, with in-store availability starting September 21 for the PartyBox 720 and September 28 for the Boombox 4.

We’ll soon be putting both through our full SoundGuys testing process. Stay tuned to see how these upgrades hold up.
