TL;DR
  • Nothing’s sub-brand CMF has launched its first portable Bluetooth speakers, the Speaker S and Speaker M, priced at $59 and $109, respectively.
  • The compact Speaker S delivers 10W of audio output, while the larger Speaker M offers 35W, with both featuring adaptive sound tuning, UltraBass, and customizable EQ presets.
  • Both speakers offer Bluetooth 6.0, USB-C audio, IP68 dust and water resistance, and up to 18 hours of battery life.

Nothing’s sub-brand, CMF, has been keeping itself busy lately, especially with its audio products. Just over a month ago, the company introduced its first open-ear earbuds, followed by the Buds Neo. And while it already has quite a few earbuds in its lineup, CMF seems to want to explore beyond what you wear in your ears. The company has now introduced its first portable Bluetooth speakers, the Speaker S and Speaker M, and they seem to have quite a lot going for them.

There’s always a good reason to have a Bluetooth speaker around. Maybe you’re heading out on a weekend trip with friends, hosting a small get-together, or just want to relax at home without earbuds. Whatever the occasion, a portable speaker can be pretty handy. And that’s where CMF’s two new speakers come in.

One for the road, one for the room

The Speaker S is the smaller of the two, making it a good fit for anyone on the go. It’s compact enough to slip into a backpack, and you can even clip it onto a strap when heading outdoors. The Speaker M, meanwhile, is larger and packs considerably more power. So, while the Speaker S seems ideal for a picnic or weekend getaway, the Speaker M makes more sense if you’re planning a house party or want something for everyday desk listening.

Naturally, that size difference also shows up in their audio hardware. The Speaker S features a 45mm driver and two passive radiators, delivering 10W RMS of output. That’s fairly modest, but it could be perfectly adequate for casual listening, especially given the speaker’s portability. The Speaker M takes things further with a dedicated 25W woofer and a 10W tweeter, delivering a combined 35W RMS. The separate drivers should help it handle bass and higher frequencies more effectively, potentially making music sound fuller and more detailed. Of course, we’ll have to hear both speakers before knowing how much of a difference that makes in practice.

Interestingly, CMF hasn’t kept all the audio enhancements exclusive to the more expensive model. Both speakers feature adaptive sound tuning, which automatically adjusts the audio as music plays to keep things balanced. UltraBass adds a little more punch to your favorite tracks, while Wide Soundstage makes the audio feel more spacious. If you prefer to adjust things yourself, the Nothing X app offers four EQ presets: Balanced, More Bass, More Treble, and Voice. For instance, you could switch to Voice when listening to a podcast and turn up the bass when your favorite playlist comes on.

There’s more here than meets the ear

But good sound is only part of what makes a Bluetooth speaker enjoyable. Nobody wants to spend several minutes figuring out how to connect one every time they switch devices, and CMF seems to have that covered. Both speakers support Bluetooth 6.0, NFC tap-to-pair, Google Fast Pair, and Microsoft Swift Pair, making the initial setup easier with compatible devices. They can also stay connected to two devices simultaneously. Say you’re playing music from your phone while working on your laptop. You can switch between them without repeatedly disconnecting and pairing. It also supports USB-C audio, letting you connect a compatible device directly to the speaker.

And since these are portable speakers, they may encounter dust, rain, or an accidental splash. Thankfully, both models carry an IP68 rating, meaning they’re dust-tight and can withstand submersion in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. So, whether you’re listening to music by the pool or get caught in an unexpected downpour, there’s some added peace of mind.

Battery life looks promising, too, with both speakers offering plenty of listening time on a single charge. Both speakers promise up to 18 hours of playback at 50% volume with UltraBass enabled. That’s enough to get through a full day of music without constantly reaching for a charger. And if the battery runs low just as you’re about to head out, a quick 10-minute charge can provide up to another hour of listening.

The CMF Speaker S costs $59, while the larger Speaker M costs $109. Both are available in White, Dark Grey, Orange, and Turquoise, with sales starting today through Nothing’s official website and select retail partners.

The appeal is that choosing the smaller, more affordable Speaker S doesn’t mean giving up most use cases. Both models offer the same connectivity options, water resistance, audio customization, and claimed battery life, leaving size and sound output as the biggest deciding factors. Of course, good specifications don’t always guarantee good sound, and we’ll have to see how these speakers perform in everyday use. Still, for a company entering the portable speaker market for the first time, CMF seems to be off to a promising start.
