Someone already bought the Bose QC Ultra 2 headphones by accident. Here's what we learned.
September 5, 2025

Yesterday, we had a bit of a panic in the office. My contact at Bose reached out with an unusual update: the embargo on their new QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) was lifting in less than 24 hours, a full five days ahead of the original schedule due to “unforeseen circumstances.”
Upon receiving the news, I had little time to ponder what could have prompted such a last-minute change because we were focused on preparing our news post and video for the following morning. But a recent Reddit post might have just revealed the reason why, and it’s a crazy story.
The luckiest warranty claim ever
For one lucky Reddit user, what started as a regular warranty visit for worn-out ear cushions became an accidental early access to unreleased hardware — headphones that weren’t supposed to hit stores until September 10 in Canada and October 2 in the US.
The customer apparently visited the store where they bought their original QC Ultra headphones 11 months ago. Instead of getting new cushions, the store clerk offered a full replacement and accidentally showed the unannounced second-generation model in their inventory system. The clerk, who was also surprised to have them already in stock, apparently retrieved the only unit in the back and decided to honor the warranty swap with it.
The fact that the headphones were even available for sale suggests a system error. Most retailers have safeguards to prevent unreleased products from appearing at checkout, and employees typically rely on those automated controls.
Despite the headphones not officially existing yet, the Reddit user was able to test them and share some valuable insights about what Bose improved.
What the accidental review revealed

The biggest complaint about the original QC Ultra was the lack of lossless USB-C audio support. The Reddit user confirmed this is finally fixed, successfully testing USB audio transmission with their MacBook while simultaneously charging the headphones — something impossible with the first generation.
They also said they were impressed with Bose’s spatial audio feature improvements. They described the new immersion mode as completely different from the original, delivering amazing 3D stage sound that isn’t movement-sensitive like before. That’s pretty great to hear, and I’m excited to try it myself.
Microphone quality also seems to have improved. When testing with a friend, they were told the microphone quality was significantly better than the previous generation. That bodes well for anyone taking calls on the go or while at work.
The user touched on some subtler design refinements, noting that the headphones looked better than expected, with a polished chrome finish that didn’t look cheap and felt slightly lighter than the first generation.
When life gives you lemons
This incident perfectly captures how product launches work in the social media age. A single retail mistake, shared on Reddit, can completely upend months of carefully planned marketing strategy.
The customer got their warranty replacement and then some. Hopefully, the store employee didn’t get in too much trouble. And Bose? They had to quickly pivot their announcement timeline, but got an authentic early review in the process.
All in all, just another day covering the tech industry.
