TL;DR
  • Beyerdynamic has announced the DT 990 PRO X, a direct successor to the iconic DT 990 PRO headphones.
  • The new model features an upgraded STELLAR.45 driver system and features modern conveniences like a detachable cable and lower impedance.
  • The Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO X is available now for $199 USD.

A few years ago, Beyerdynamic unveiled the DT 900 PRO X studio headphones, which we assumed were the successor to the legacy DT 990 PRO studio headphones. Turns out, we were wrong – Beyerdynamic had another trick up its sleeve.

Today, Beyerdynamic announced the launch of the DT 990 PRO X studio headphones. While Beyerdynamic is pushing the DT 990 PRO X as a direct successor of the DT 990 PRO, it’s really more of a combination of that legacy headphone combined with the newer DT 900 PRO X. I know, these naming conventions suck.

You’ll still find the classic DT 990 PRO design on these headphones.

This new model retains the hallmark open-back design of the DT 990 PRO while introducing a detachable cable, improved comfort, and the STELLAR.45 driver system for supposed improvements to sound quality. With a reduced impedance of 48 ohms, the DT 990 PRO X is designed to perform well across consumer devices.

Priced at $199 USD, the DT 990 PRO X is now available through Beyerdynamic’s website and authorized retailers. This is $100 cheaper than the starting price of the previous DT 900 PRO X, despite the headphones seemingly sharing similar specs. Stay tuned for our full review coming soon, where we’ll see if these headphones can live up to the legacy of those that came before it.
