TL;DR
  • Spotify will stop supporting username-based logins on September 1, 2026.
  • Users will still be able to sign in using their email address or linked accounts such as Google and Apple.
  • This move could improve account security, as usernames are often public while email addresses are generally private.

Your Spotify username might be on borrowed time. The company appears to be phasing out username-based sign-ins later this year, meaning users will soon need to rely on their email address or an existing linked account to access the service. According to an email sent to subscribers, support for logging in with a Spotify username will end on September 1, 2026.

A Reddit user posted a screenshot of an email from Spotify outlining the upcoming transition. While the company hasn’t publicly announced the move through its newsroom, support pages, or community forums, the email suggests preparations are already underway.

For most users, this probably won’t change much. Many people already sign in using Google, Apple, Facebook, or an email address and may not even remember their Spotify username. However, long-time Spotify subscribers who still enter a username when setting up a new phone, logging in on a desktop app, or accessing their account on a shared device may need to adjust their habits.

Spotify’s reasoning isn’t explicitly stated in the email, but the shift makes sense from a security perspective. Usernames are often public-facing and can sometimes be spotted in playlists, profiles, or shared links. Email addresses, on the other hand, aren’t typically visible to other users, creating an extra layer of obscurity for account access. It’s not a replacement for strong passwords or two-factor authentication, but it does remove one piece of information that could otherwise be easily guessed.

The email also includes instructions for users who want to update the email address associated with their Spotify account before the change takes effect. That’s worth checking sooner rather than later, especially if your account is still linked to an old email that you no longer use.

Importantly, Spotify doesn’t appear to be removing alternative sign-in methods. Linked accounts such as Google and Apple should continue to work as usual, based on the wording of the email. The change appears to be focused specifically on Spotify’s legacy username login system. So if you’re one of those users who still remembers your Spotify username by heart, it may finally be time to memorize something else: the email address attached to your account.
