TL;DR
  • Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones and WF-1000XM5 earbuds are receiving a major firmware update.
  • The new features include support for Gemini Live and Audio Sharing with fast pair.
  •  To access these new features, update the WF-1000XM5 to version 6.0.0 and the WH-1000XM6 to version 3.0.0.

Sony is rolling out new firmware updates for its flagship WH-1000XM6 over-ear headphones and WF-1000XM5 true wireless earbuds, introducing key new features including audio sharing via Auracast and support for Google’s Gemini Live AI assistant. The updates are available now through the Sony Headphones Connect app.

The most notable addition is support for Auracast, a feature enabled by Bluetooth LE Audio. With a compatible Android device, you can now pair multiple sets of headphones to one source. This makes it possible to listen to the same audio with a friend or even broadcast audio to a larger group using QR codes or Fast Pair. This Audio Sharing feature is one that AirPods have had for a while, but only when using multiple AirPods with an iPhone, and only with two sets. Through Bluetooth Auracast support, you can broadcast to multiple Sony headphones from a variety of devices.

The firmware also brings enhancements to system-level security and adds compatibility with digital assistants and head tracking when using Bluetooth LE Audio. Users should note that headphones will need to be re-paired with devices after the update is installed for the new features to function correctly.

Additionally, the WF-1000XM5 earbuds are receiving an upgrade to their location tracking capabilities via Google’s Find My Device network. Owners can now locate each individual earbud and opt out of tracking without needing to place them in their charging case—an improvement over previous limitations.
