Sonos PLAY-5

If you’re a fan of great speakers (and let’s face it who isn’t?), then today is a good day. The new Sonos PLAY:5 speaker is now available for pre-order on their website. Sonos claims that the speaker provides a listening experience that is “closer than ever to how every track was mastered in the studio.” That’s good news if you prefer a more accurate yet fulfilling sound while listening to your music.

Sonos keeps the same sleek and minimal design with the PLAY:5 that you’d find in their other speakers. Where other brands have become flashier, Sonos has kept the focus on creating a beautiful piece of technology that blends in with your home decor instead of fighting to be the center of attention. That said, it’s still a pretty looking speaker. It comes in both matte black and white with the front covered by a metal grille. On the back you’ll find the necessary ports for getting things set-up while up top is where you’ll find some on-board controls. This include a touch interface that lets you simply tap for volume up or down and swipe to change tracks. That’s pretty cool all by itself, but this speaker has a couple of more tricks up its hypothetical sleeves.

Different people have different needs, so if you want to put a speaker in your bathroom you’ll be happy to know that the PLAY:5 is also humidity resistant. That’s not to say that it’s waterproof or even water resistant, but at least you won’t have to worry about damaging your brand new speaker just by taking a hot shower. On top of that the speaker uses what’s called “Trueplay tuning” which measures the acoustics of the room and tweaks the output of the speaker to better match the environment. That’s a feature that can definitely pair well with the awesome acoustics of most bathrooms.

On the inside there are a total of six drivers powering the speaker. Three tweeters to take care of the high frequencies and three mid-woofers that handle both the mids and the bass. Like most other Sonos speakers you can add two of these to a Sonos PLAYBAR and SUB in order to achieve that full 5.1 surround sound of your dreams. It also comes with tons of radio stations pre-installed as well as full compatibility with basically any streaming service you can throw at it. If you’re not big on streaming you can also play music files the are stored on up to 16 computers.

If you’re already a part of the Sonos ecosystem then this is a good speaker to add to your setup. On the flip side, it’s also not a bad speaker to start off your collection if you’re new to the home audio game. They will be available in the U.S online and in stores on November 20th, with a global release on November 25th. If you think this might be for you make sure to pre-order yours for $499.
