ONLY IN VERY SPECIFIC CIRCUMSTANCES, depending on what headphones you have.

Thing is, an amplifier is only necessary if the source of your music (smartphone, HiFi system, whatever) cannot adequately power your headphones. If you’d like to know more, we have a whole article tackling this one. But the vast majority of consumer headphones out there don’t need an amp.

The reason why many people elect to use one is when their headphones have a really high impedance, or a really low sensitivity. If you have a set of super-expensive headphones with a sensitivity under 90dB/mW or your impedance is over 200Ω, then it’s worth considering an amp. Otherwise, it’s probably not necessary.
