Spotify hits 10 million paid subscribers

Just a day after Rdio announced it now serves 60 countries, Spotify proves it is still the streaming service to beat with over 10 million subscribers.

Hey, remember how yesterday, we mentioned that Rdio had expanded, bringing its streaming music service to a total of 60 countries? Apparently Spotify heard as well and, not to be outdone, released a bit of an announcement of their own.

In a blog post released today, the company announced that it now has over 10 million subscribers. That’s 10 million paying subscribers, and a total of 40 million active users. In case you hadn’t noticed, that’s an awful lot of people.

The company celebrated the new milestone with an infographic detailing some stats from the service. A few tidbits include the total of 1.5 billion playlists created since the company’s founding and the fact that 5 million playlists are created or updated every day by listeners.

So how do Rdio’s numbers stack up? Writing about Spotify’s announcement today, Engadget mentioned that as of late last year, Rdio had 6 million paying subscribers. While it isn’t clear how far Rdio might have come in sheer subscriber numbers since they last talked about them, they’re still ahead in sheer countries served, with their 60 narrowly beating out Spotify’s 56.

Numbers are one thing, but which music streaming service do you prefer?
