New design and universal search coming to Sonos Controller app

A new simplified design and universal search are among the features headed to an updated version of the Sonos controller app.

One of the unfortunate truths of being a lover of all things sound is that once you get in deep, things can get expensive in a hurry. Yes, we’re looking at you Sonos. That doesn’t look like it’s going to change, but at least the app you use to control your Sonos setup has some cool new features coming.

One of the major changes taking place in the app is a simplification of its user interface. The new design will feature three main “modules” which will allow you to control what music is playing, where it’s playing, and what’s going to play next. In addition, we’ll likely see some general beautification of the UI elements, not that the app is in dire need of sprucing up.

The next change is much more exciting: universal search. Searching for an artist will now search multiple music surfaces at once. From the entry on the Sonos blog:

Play their radio station on Pandora. Look up their album on Spotify. Play one of their latest tracks through Hype Machine. It’s completely up to you.

The bad news is that most of us won’t be able to actually use this new and improved app any time soon – it’s supposed to be released sometime in the spring. If you use Android, however, you can sign up for the beta and get an early pee at the newly-updated app. There isn’t any guarantee that you’ll get in, but it’s still worth a try.
