I’m buying my first home theater system, and do I need an amplifier for the speakers? I can’t find an answer anywhere.

Probably not—these systems generally have their hardware tucked into the receiver. It’s possible you may want an amp if the receiver is somehow not powerful enough, or if you pair ultra-high impedance speakers with it.

Just be sure that you’re not using too thin a speaker wire, though, as it’s inherently unable to carry as much current as a thicker wire. In general, you should always use the thickest possible cable that still works with your setup.
