If you’re looking for a pair of premium open back headphones for a not-so premium price, Massdrop has partnered with AKG for the limited edition AKG K7XX headphones. These are based on the 65th anniversary edition of the K702’s and come with the added Massdrop logo and serial number on the inside of the frames. Apparently this partnership was done a couple of months ago, but these are the last 1000 of the 6000 pairs that were made in this special edition version.

As an open back pair of headphones the K7XX’s are mainly intended for indoor use or in studios, but can definitely be used with portable devices as well. Just be willing to swap out the included 3m (9.8 feet) cable with one that’s a little easier to fit in your pocket. The K7XX headphones have a frequency range of 10Hz – 39.8kHz and a sensitivity of 105 dB. The headband is made of genuine leather and the ear cups use velour to cover the memory foam padding, so I’m fairly certain they’re more than comfortable. Included is a 2 year manufacturers warranty and a 1/4 inch adapter for plugging the 3.5mm jack into any other equipment you might be using.

Massdrop is a site that gets a number of people to vote on a certain product, and then buy said product in bulk from the manufacturer. This buying in bulk drops the price of each individual unit and, in the case of the K7XX headphones, makes the $650 price tag drop to only $200. At the time of this post there are 6 days left to join and get yourself a pair of the remaining 600 or so headphones. All you have to do is sign up to Massdrop and click the ‘buy’ button. Massdrop says they will begin shipping the headphones on March 6th. Happy shopping!
